Sitting upon the shores of Loch Eil and Loch Linnhe, Fort William is the largest city in the Scottish Highlands. The visitors wishing to tour the Scottish Highlands in their own hire car, Fort William is the logical place in which to start their tour and pick up their rental car. Although there is no airport local to Fort William a full national row service runs into Fort William a railway station regularly. Mountain biking is something that Fort William has become famous for in recent years and since 2002 it has hosted a round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and recently hosted the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships in 2007.
On the outskirts of town close to the Nevis Range Gondola is a world-class downhill mountain bike track which attracts thousands of visitors each year from all over the world. In addition to this downhill track the intriguingly named "Witches Trails" can be found close by which have been more popular than the downhill track in recent years. Fort William is also a popular town with climbers and hill walkers due to its location extremely close to Ben Nevis, which is the highest mountain to be found in the British Isles. Fort William makes an excellent base from which to explore the Scottish Highlands in all their splendour from the comfort of your own hire car. |
